Manufacturing Day or MFG Day, held annually on the first Friday of October, represents a nationwide opportunity to recognize how far modern manufacturing has come, highlight new advancements, and inspire the next generation of skilled professionals entering this line of work.
The History of Manufacturing Day
The inaugural Manufacturing Day was held in 2012 and has since become an annual event supported by organizations such as the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute, and the Department of Labor.
The concept of Manufacturing Day was born out of a desire to address a growing skills gap in the manufacturing industry. As experienced workers started to retire and dwindle in volume, there were growing concerns about the number of qualified individuals left to fill existing roles. To combat the issue, the Manufacturing Institute, an education and workforce partner to NAM, came together with industry leaders, educators, and policymakers to encourage the celebration of manufacturing careers, both accomplished and novice.
